As one of the 'after the war kids', Sally's lifestyle was embedded in the many cultural traditions of the people who lived in the old pearling town. She had the world at her doorstep.

About the Author

Sally Bin Demin grew up in Broome during the 1940s and 1950s. Her mother was a member of the stolen generation who spent over fifty years in a relationship with a Malay man. Denim herself acknowledges she is also of Asian and Aboriginal ancestry and identifies with other ethnic groups.

She lived at Beagle Bay, then at Holy Child Orphanage with her sister, Pearl, while her mother worked in various houses in Broome. At age 14 she went to work at the Streeter and Male general store for the next twenty one years.
