The Moogai (feature)
Synopsis
Sarah and Fergus, a young First Nations couple, have just had their first child, but what should be one of the happiest times in their lives turns to terror.
The Moogai comes into Sarah’s life after she suffers cardiac shock during the birth of her second baby and almost dies. As soon as she’s home again, the hallucinations and the nightmares start and life becomes a battle to keep the malevolent spirit from taking her new baby.
Fergus desperately wants to believe her, but as she becomes more upset and unstable he is increasingly concerned for the safety of their child and doubts her ability to look after the baby and her young daughter. Is Sarah really being visited by a child-stealing spirit or is she the biggest threat to their family's safety? Or might a short spell in a psych ward be a good idea?
The Moogai explores post-natal depression, transgenerational trauma and Australia's Stolen Generation. But it is also a story of the value of children and the power of family.
